Anti Slip Media For Floor Coating Products

Anti Slip Media For Floor Coating Products

The Building Code of Australia (BCA) has introduced Deemed to Satisfy (DtS) provisions for determining the slip-resistance to treads and nosing to stairways of all Classes of buildings and pedestrian ramps and landings of Class 2 - 9 buildings.

As of 1st of May 2014, treads or nosing to treads of a stairway must comply with a slip resistance classification as tested to Australian Standard AS 4586 – 2013 Slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials.  This is a new test method for slip resistance, the old 'X' ratings have been replaced with 'P' ratings.

Most floor coating paints, sealers, and epoxy products are available in the smooth format, to achieve a slip-resistant floor covering using an epoxy or polyurethane product, you will be required to mix the product into the coating product or broadcast anti-slip media over the wet film and lock it in with another coat

Some retail spaces, most commercial and industrial sites may require an anti-slip floor covering and slip rating is measured by P or R ratings and here is a quick guide on what these numbers mean

Examples of P2 and R9 Slip resistant floors

Indoor tiles
Shop floors
Timber flooring

P2 and R9 floors can be cleaned and vacuumed easily and are generally recommended for the following areas

Shops in the enclosed shopping centers
Off-street shops where there is a possibility of customers walking in with wet shoes
Supermarkets or where there is a possibility of liquid spillage
Mechanical workshops
Warehouses
Walkways

Examples of P3 and R10 Slip resistant floors

Bathroom tiles
External tiles and pavers

P3 and R10 Slip Resistance floors are a bit harder to mop and commonly used in the following areas

Cafe/dining area floors
Supermarkets or where there is a possibility of liquid spillage
Mechanical workshops
Warehouses
Walkways
Flat Driveways
Patios

Examples of P4 and R11 Slip resistant floors

- Hospital bathroom floor coverings

- Unsealed brick pavers

- Stenciled driveways

P4 and R11 Slip Resistance floors are much harder to mop and commonly used in the following areas

- Cafe or restaurant back of the house areas

- Loading docks

- External ramps

- Steep driveways

Examples of P5 and R12 Slip resistant floors

- External shopping center ramps

- Very rough paving tiles

P5 and R12 Slip Resistance floors are almost impossible to mop and the cleaning method will be to use a water hose or pressure cleaning equipment and are commonly used in the following areas

Industrial kitchens
Food processing areas
Fuel refineries
Butcher shops
Pool surrounds

The information listed above is to be used as a guide only and the required slip rating for your project should be discussed with the local council or private certifiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does anti-slip media work with epoxy and polyurethane coatings?

Anti-slip media (such as aluminium oxide, specialised sand, or floating synthetic particles) is added to your floor coating system to create a textured, slip-resistant surface. Depending on the product, it can either be mixed directly into your final coat of epoxy/polyurethane before rolling, or it can be "broadcast" (scattered) over a wet base coat and then sealed in with a final topcoat. This provides essential traction, significantly reducing the risk of slips and falls, especially in wet or oily conditions.

What is the difference between Aluminium Oxide and Floating Anti-Slip Media?

They serve different purposes based on the desired finish and application method:

  • Aluminium Oxide: It is highly resistant to heavy wear, impacts, and chemicals. Because it is heavy, it must be broadcast over a wet base coat rather than mixed into the bucket. It is ideal for industrial settings, loading docks, and heavy machinery areas.
  • Floating Anti-Slip Media: A lightweight, synthetic additive (like Ultrakote Floating Anti-Slip Media). Because it is so light, it suspends evenly in the bucket when mixed with high-solids epoxies or polyurethanes without settling. It is perfect for rolling out a consistent, light-textured finish (P2 or R9 rating) on residential floors, pathways, and commercial shops.
What is the difference between P3, P4 and P5 slip ratings?

Slip ratings determine the level of traction a floor provides in wet or dry conditions. Here is a quick guide to what each rating covers under AS 4586:2013:

  • P3 (Soft/Standard): Ideal for areas not frequently exposed to heavy water but that still require traction. Suitable for shopping malls, office bathrooms, hotel lobbies, internal stairs, and residential kitchens.
  • P4: Highly recommended for outdoor areas and wet zones. This includes outdoor entryways, external ramps, footpaths, courtyards, swimming pool surrounds, and communal showers.
  • P5: The highest level of traction available. Designed for extreme wet or greasy conditions and steep slopes, such as commercial kitchens, undercover loading docks, and steep sloping driveways (steeper than 1 in 14).
Will adding anti-slip media change the colour of my floor?

No. When applied correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions, high-quality anti-slip media (especially floating media and aluminium oxide) is designed to integrate seamlessly into the body of the coating. It does not alter the physical properties or the final colour of your epoxy, polyurethane, or concrete sealer.

Do you offer clear, ready-to-use non-slip coatings?

Yes, if you don't want to mix powders or broadcast aggregates yourself, we supply the Stellmann Non-Slip Clear PRO series. These are advanced, water-based, VOC-free clear coats that already contain the non-slip media. Available in precise P3, P4, and P5 ratings, they can be rolled directly over existing concrete, tiles, or epoxy floors to instantly provide certified slip resistance without hiding the surface beneath.
