Frequently Asked Questions

What makes cementitious polyurethane different from standard epoxy?

Cementitious polyurethane (often referred to as poly-cement or urethane cement) is an advanced hybrid coating. While standard epoxy is rigid, poly-cement combines the extreme chemical resistance of polyurethane with the heavy-duty durability of cement.

Where is cementitious polyurethane flooring typically used?

Because of its incredible resilience and hygiene credentials, it is the go-to choice for the most demanding environments. It is highly recommended for commercial kitchens, food and beverage processing plants, abattoirs, dairy facilities, bakeries, chemical plants, and cold storage freezers.

Is cementitious polyurethane hygienic and food-safe?

Absolutely. Systems like Sikafloor PurCem hold HACCP Food Safety Certification (Food Zone Classification: SSZ). The cured surface is entirely seamless, non-tainting, and non-porous. It will not harbor bacteria or absorb dirt, blood, or grease, making it incredibly easy to clean and fully compliant with strict food industry health standards.

Can poly-cement be applied to new or damp concrete?

Yes, this is a major advantage for commercial projects with tight deadlines. Unlike standard epoxies that require concrete to cure for a full 28 days, moisture-tolerant systems like Sikafloor PurCem can be applied to "green" (new) concrete after just 7 days. It can also be installed over mature damp concrete, provided there is no ponding water.

Can I apply a cementitious polyurethane system myself (DIY)?

No. Cementitious polyurethane systems have a very short working time (pot life) and require highly specialized application techniques using screed boxes, pin screeds, and specific troweling methods. Because of the technical complexity and fast-paced nature of the installation, these products are strictly for trained, professional flooring contractors.
