Step-by-Step Guide to a Successful Seamless Flake System
Follow these steps for a long-lasting, professional finish. No guesswork required!
1. Surface Preparation (Crucial Step)
Prepare the substrate thoroughly by diamond grinding or acid etching. To achieve a successful bond, your surface must be free of dust, oil/grease, loose particles, paint, and moisture. If your floor is subject to rising dampness, you must apply a moisture barrier primer prior to your base coat.
2. Repair Cracks & Imperfections
Fill in all cracks using a 2-pack epoxy filler (such as Sikadur 31 CFN). For larger cracks and spalls, use the Sydney Industrial Coatings’ Epoxy Coving and Repair Kit. Patching mortar must be fully cured (minimum 6–8 hours) before it can be ground flat or coated.
3. Apply the Epoxy First Coat
Apply first coat of Ultrashield thinned 10% with Xylene or GP Thinners. General curing time at 20°C is a minimum of 8 hours (this can vary if solvent is added). Xylene or thinner can be purchased from local hardware shop or bunnings.
4. Prep for the Base Coat
Return within 24 hours of applying the primer to remove any rubbish and imperfections (grind down high sections and patch low sections). Note: If the coating is left uneven, it will show through your final coat. If this step is not completed within 30–36 hours, the floor must be lightly scuffed using 80-grit sandpaper for adhesion.
5. Apply Base Coat & Broadcast Flake
Apply an even coat of your UltraShield Epoxy base coat. While the product is still wet, strap on your included spike shoes, walk over the epoxy, and broadcast the flake evenly until the floor is completely covered . Apply safe practices while walking in spike shoes. Allow to cure.
6. Clean Up & Apply UV Top Coats
Return the next day to vacuum and blow off any loose, un-stuck flake. Apply your Ultrakote UVSeal Clear Coats to seal the flakes. General curing time (at 20°C) is a minimum of 8 hours per clear coat. Ensure the correct amount of product is applied.
8. Curing Times Before Use
On a freshly applied coating, the floor will be safe for light foot traffic after a minimum of 24 hours. Do not park cars, boats, trailers, or move heavy machinery onto the floor for a minimum of 5 days after the final coat is applied.
