EPIREZ Safe Step 100 Heavy Pedestrian Grade Anti-Slip Coating

EPIREZ Safe Step 100 is a single-pack epoxy ester anti-slip coating designed for areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. It provides a durable, textured safety surface with optimum adhesion to metal, concrete and wood surfaces.

Safe Step 100 is designed for both indoor and outdoor applications where a durable non-slip surface is required. It is easy to apply by roller or trowel and can also be touched up by brush.

The cured coating provides chemical resistance and fire retardancy, with resistance to gasoline, oil, acids, alkalis and aliphatic solvents.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Single-pack system: Resin, grit and colour are combined in one ready-to-use coating.
  • Heavy pedestrian grade: Designed for areas exposed to heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Anti-slip performance: Tested by CSIRO with an anti-slip rating of up to R13.
  • Broad substrate compatibility: Suitable for concrete, asphalt, timber and metal surfaces.
  • Easy application: Can be applied by roller or trowel.
  • Simple touch-ups: Brush application can be used for touch-up work.
  • Chemical resistant: Resists gasoline, oil, acids, alkalis and aliphatic solvents.
  • Fire retardant: Provides fire retardancy in the cured state.
  • Indoor and outdoor use: Designed for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Where Can EPIREZ® Safe Step 100 Be Used?

Safe Step 100 is designed for pedestrian areas where a durable anti-slip surface is required.

  • Pedestrian ramps in factories
  • Shopping centres and other busy areas
  • Wet areas such as pool surrounds
  • Areas behind hotel bars
  • Stairways
  • Catwalks
  • Nursing homes
  • Schools
  • Change rooms
  • Equipment platforms
  • Bakeries
  • Food processing plants

Anti-Slip Performance

EPIREZ® Safe Step 100 has been tested by CSIRO and has an anti-slip rating of up to R13 according to AS 4586:2013 Appendix D.

The coating creates a textured, non-slip surface. Roller application produces an irregular, ridged profile, while trowel application creates a rough, textured surface.

For roller application, the non-slip aggregate should be properly exposed to achieve the intended non-slip characteristics. If the aggregate is not adequately exposed, the coating may become slippery when wet.

Coverage and Kit Size

Kit Size Application Method Estimated Coverage
4 L Roller or trowel 4.8 m²

Application of EPIREZ® Safe Step 100

Safe Step 100 can be applied by roller or trowel. The coating can be applied at surface temperatures between 10°C and 40°C.

Application is not recommended when the surface temperature is below 10°C or above 40°C. Lower temperatures and high humidity can increase drying times, while higher temperatures can shorten them.

Exterior applications should be protected from rain for at least 12–24 hours after application, depending on humidity.

Protect the coating from heavy or extended exposure to water, oil and chemicals for 5–7 days.

Mixing Instructions

Safe Step 100 is a single-pack epoxy system. The resin, grit and colour are combined as one part, so no Part A and Part B mixing is required.

  • Stir the contents thoroughly before use.
  • Apply directly from the can.

Roller Application

Roller application provides the most effective non-slip characteristics with an irregular, ridged profile.

  • Use a hard-faced roller.
  • Pour a ribbon of Safe Step 100 approximately 600 mm long and 150 mm wide.
  • Roll in slow, straight strokes using moderate pressure.
  • Avoid excessive rolling or pressing down too heavily.
  • Roll across welds or joints rather than along them.
  • Do not apply the material too thickly, as it may not cure properly.

Trowel Application

Trowel application creates a rough, textured surface with excellent non-slip characteristics.

  • Use a flexible-bladed plasterer's finishing trowel approximately 100 mm × 300 mm.
  • Use smooth edges rather than a notched trowel.
  • Pour a ribbon of Safe Step 100 approximately 600 mm long and 150 mm wide.
  • Hold the trowel at approximately 45° to the surface.
  • Spread using a sweeping motion.
  • Reverse the trowel angle for the opposite stroke.
  • Use straight strokes when covering corners and similar areas.

Concrete Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is important before applying Safe Step 100.

  • Remove oil, grease, dirt, wax and other contamination using an emulsifiable water-based cleaner or degreaser.
  • Clean the surface with fresh water.
  • Apply an acidic etch such as EPIREZ® Concrete Etch & Cleaner.
  • Rinse again with fresh water.
  • Allow the surface to dry completely before application.
  • Roughen smooth or glazed surfaces.
  • Prime porous surfaces with a suitable sealer before application.
  • New concrete should be cured for at least 28 days.

For porous surfaces, EPIREZ® Crack Repair Epoxy Sealer is listed as a suitable sealer option.

Metal and Galvanised Surface Preparation

Remove paint, rust and mill scale from metal and galvanised surfaces, preferably by grit blasting.

Prime the prepared surface with a suitable etch primer before applying Safe Step 100. GALMET® Keytite Etch Primer is listed as a suitable option.

Timber Surface Preparation

Timber should be primed with EPIREZ® Crack Repair Epoxy Sealer or another suitable wood primer before applying Safe Step 100.

Drying and Cure Times

  • Light traffic: 12 hours at 20°C
  • Heavy traffic: 72 hours at 20°C
  • Full chemical resistance: 7 days at 25°C

Higher temperatures can shorten drying times, while lower temperatures and high humidity can extend drying times.

Chemical Resistance

In the cured state, Safe Step 100 provides resistance to:

  • Gasoline
  • Oil
  • Acids
  • Alkalis
  • Aliphatic solvents

Important Product Limitations

  • Do not apply when surface temperatures are below 10°C.
  • Do not apply when surface temperatures are above 40°C.
  • Protect exterior applications from rain for at least 12–24 hours.
  • Protect the coating from heavy or extended exposure to water, oil and chemicals for 5–7 days.
  • Material applied too thickly may not cure properly.
