EPIREZ® Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder 133AR is a chemically resistant epoxy binder designed to be combined with selected aggregates to create trowel-applied epoxy mortar and composite flooring systems.

It is designed for concrete surfaces requiring resistance to aggressive chemicals, including concentrated sulphuric acid, alkalis and solvents. The cured epoxy mortar system also provides excellent adhesion, abrasion resistance, erosion resistance and impact resistance.

For flooring applications, the recommended mortar screed uses 1 volume of EPIREZ Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder to 4 volumes of EPIREZ Patching & Flooring Mortar Aggregate (QA2). The resulting epoxy mortar can be trowelled to create a chemically resistant surface with a minimum thickness of 4 mm.

The binder can also be used for horizontal and vertical repair mortars, with different aggregate ratios depending on the application.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Broad chemical resistance: Resists a wide range of acids, alkalis and solvents.
  • 98% sulphuric acid resistance: Provides very good resistance to concentrated sulphuric acid.
  • Excellent mechanical properties: Ultimate compressive strength is 75 MPa.

Coverage and Estimating Data

System Estimated Coverage Thickness
20 L EPIREZ® Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder 20 m² 1 mm thick
20 L Binder + 60 L EPIREZ Patching & Flooring Mortar Aggregate (QA2) 15 m² 4 mm thick

Surface Preparation

Concrete surfaces should be clean, sound and properly prepared before applying the epoxy system.

  • Remove previous coatings and all loose material.
  • New concrete must be at least 28 days old.
  • Remove oil and grease contamination using a suitable surface degreaser.
  • Hose off using high-pressure water.
  • Captive blast clean to expose firmly adhered aggregate.
  • Rinse with water and allow the surface to dry.

Alternatively, concrete can be acid etched using 1 part commercial muriatic acid to 2 parts clean water. Neutralise the surface with fresh water and allow it to dry.

Steel Surface Preparation

Steel should be abrasive blast cleaned to AS 1627 Part 4:2005 to a Class 3 white-metal finish with a minimum profile height of 75–100 microns.

The surface should be free from grease, oil and other contaminants. The stated contamination limits are:

  • Chloride contaminants: Less than 7 mg/cm²
  • Soluble ferrous ions: Less than 10 mg/cm²
  • Sulphate contaminants: Less than 17 mg/cm²

Priming

Prime concrete surfaces using EPIREZ Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder 133AR at a coverage rate of approximately 5 m² per litre.

The primer should be touch-dry before proceeding. Apply the Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder mortar within 24 hours of priming. If this period is exceeded, the sub-base should be reprimed.

Keep primed surfaces clean before applying the mortar system.

Mixing Instructions

The mixing ratio for the binder is 1 part Hardener to 3 parts Compound by volume.

  1. Measure enough Hardener and Compound for approximately 30 minutes of use.
  2. Mix using a low-speed 400 rpm power mixer.
  3. Ensure all material from the container sides, lip and stirrer is incorporated.
  4. Avoid air entrapment during mixing.
  5. When preparing mortar, add EPIREZ® Patching & Flooring Mortar Aggregate (QA2) while mixing.
  6. Continue mixing until a uniform mortar consistency is achieved.

Full units are recommended because the components are pre-measured.

Application

EPIREZ® Acid Resistant Epoxy Binder can be applied by spray, roller or brush when used as a coating or primer.

For trowellable mortar applications, combine the mixed binder with the appropriate quantity of EPIREZ® Patching & Flooring Mortar Aggregate (QA2). Pour the mixed mortar onto the prepared substrate and apply by trowel.

Wipe the trowel occasionally and sparingly with EPIREZ® Epoxy Thinner (No. 3) to assist final trowelling.

A tight surface finish should be achieved to minimise porosity. The minimum thickness for the trowellable coating is 4 mm.

Application Conditions

  • Surface and ambient temperature must be at least 10°C.
  • Substrate temperature must be at least 10°C.
  • Application is not recommended above 45°C surface temperature.
  • The surface must be at least 3°C above the dew point.
  • Relative humidity must remain below 85% during application.
  • In confined spaces, relative humidity should remain below 50%.
  • Do not add thinners when spraying.

Drying and Cure Times

  • Work time: 30 minutes at 25°C
  • Cure time: 24 hours at 25°C
  • Full chemical resistance: 7 days at 25°C

For optimum chemical resistance, allow the binder and mortar systems to cure for 7 days at 25°C. Longer curing times should be allowed at lower temperatures.

Important Product Limitations

  • Do not apply below 10°C.
  • Application is not recommended with surface temperatures above 45°C.
  • The substrate must be at least 3°C above the dew point.
  • Relative humidity must be below 85% during application.
  • Confined spaces require relative humidity below 50%.
  • Do not add thinners when spraying.
  • The minimum trowellable coating thickness is 4 mm.
  • Longer curing times are required at lower temperatures.
