EpiMax 842 Clear Fast-Curing UV Stable Flooring System

EpiMax 842 Clear Fast-Curing UV Stable Flooring System is a two-component polyaspartic coating designed for fast-curing concrete floor systems where appearance, durability and return to service are important.

As a clear seal coat, EpiMax 842 Clear can be used to protect and finish a range of flooring systems. It is particularly suited to decorative floors where a clear topcoat is required over a solid-colour or flake finish.

One of the main advantages of EpiMax 842 Clear is its fast cure. At 25°C, it has a 15–20 minute work time, a 90–120 minute recoat window and a stated cure time of 3 hours. This allows flooring systems to progress quickly compared with slower-curing coating systems.

The coating also provides UV resistance, excellent gloss retention and good weatherability characteristics. Its high film build can help reduce the number of coats needed to achieve the required overall coating thickness.

How EpiMax 842 Clear Is Used

EpiMax 842 Clear is primarily used as a clear seal coat within a complete flooring system. The exact application will depend on the floor design and the finish being created.

For a solid-colour flooring system, EpiMax 842 Clear can be applied as an optional clear top coat. A non-slip additive can also be incorporated into the clear coat where additional traction is required.

For decorative flake flooring, EpiMax 842 Clear is used for the clear topcoat stages after the flakes have been applied and the surface has hardened sufficiently for preparation.

Solid Colour Flooring System

When used as the clear topcoat in a solid-colour flooring system, the coloured base coats are first applied to the primed concrete surface.

  1. Apply the solid-colour base coat at approximately 6 m² per litre using a short-nap roller.
  2. Allow the coating to harden for 90–120 minutes.
  3. Apply the second solid-colour coat at approximately 6 m² per litre.
  4. Once the system has reached the stated traffic exposure time, it can be opened to foot traffic after 3 hours and vehicles after 72 hours.
  5. EpiMax 842 Clear can optionally be applied as the clear top coat.
  6. A suitable non-slip additive can be incorporated into the clear top coat where additional traction is required.

For commercial or high-traffic areas, a third coat may be required.

Flake Flooring System

EpiMax 842 Clear can also be used as the clear finishing component of a decorative flake flooring system.

  1. Apply the solid-colour base coat at approximately 5–6 m² per litre using a short-nap roller.
  2. Immediately broadcast the selected flakes over the wet base coat.
  3. Allow the coating to harden for 90–120 minutes.
  4. Lightly sand or scrape the surface.
  5. Apply the first EpiMax 842 Clear coat at approximately 6 m² per litre using a short-nap roller.
  6. Allow the first clear coat to harden for 90–120 minutes.
  7. Apply the second EpiMax 842 Clear coat at approximately 6 m² per litre.

The stated flake flooring system can be opened to foot traffic after approximately 3–4 hours and vehicles after 72 hours.

Coverage

The typical application rate for EpiMax 842 Clear as a clear topcoat is approximately 6 m² per litre.

Application Typical Rate
EpiMax 842 Clear top coat Approximately 6 m² per litre
EpiMax 842 Clear primer Dilute 1:1 by volume with Thinner X

Actual coverage can vary depending on the prepared surface and application conditions.

Mixing Instructions

EpiMax 842 Clear uses a convenient 1:1 mixing ratio by volume.

  1. Combine Part A and Part B at a 1:1 ratio by volume.
  2. Mix for 1 minute.
  3. Add 10% Thinner X to extend the work time.
  4. Mix for a further 30 seconds.

Avoid excessive mixing, as this will reduce the available work time.

With a work time of only 15–20 minutes at 25°C, the application area should be planned and ready before mixing begins.

Priming Concrete for EpiMax 842 Clear

Concrete must be properly prepared before the EpiMax 842 Clear system is applied.

EpiMax 842 Clear can be used as its own primer when diluted 1:1 by volume with Thinner X. After the primer has hardened, the clear seal coat can be applied.

Concrete Surface Preparation

Good surface preparation is important for achieving reliable adhesion and performance from the flooring system.

  • Concrete should be at least 28 days old.
  • Remove contaminants, additives, curing agents, oils and existing coatings.
  • The concrete should be alkaline in nature.
  • Prepare the surface by professional diamond grinding or captive blast cleaning as appropriate.
  • Expose firmly held aggregate to achieve a CSP 2 surface profile.
  • Vacuum all dust and debris after mechanical preparation.
  • Allow the surface to dry if wet.
  • Always confirm that the preparation is adequate before coating.

Drying and Cure Times

EpiMax 842 Clear is designed for fast turnaround between coats and rapid curing.

  • Work time: 15–20 minutes at 25°C.
  • Recoat window: 90–120 minutes at 25°C.
  • Cure time: 3 hours at 25°C.

For the stated solid-colour system, foot traffic is possible after 3 hours and vehicle traffic after 72 hours.

For the stated flake flooring system, foot traffic is possible after approximately 3–4 hours and vehicles after 72 hours.

UV Resistance and Gloss Retention

EpiMax 842 Clear is UV resistant and provides excellent gloss retention. It also has good weatherability characteristics, making it suitable for the range of applications specified in the technical information.

Slip Resistance

Where additional traction is required, suitable non-slip media can be incorporated into the first or second clear coat.

For a solid-colour flooring system, a clear top coat containing non-slip additive can be used to enhance traction.

General Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning is an important part of keeping coated floor surfaces safe and maintaining their appearance.

  • Vacuum, wash, scrub or sweep regularly according to site requirements.
  • Mechanical sweepers and scrubbers can provide effective results.
  • Remove spills immediately.
  • Scrub affected areas and allow the floor to dry completely.
  • Check that the cleaning frequency and effectiveness are appropriate for the site.

Certain types of tyres can leave tyre stains on garage floors. Because tyre composition and age can vary significantly, the technical information recommends carrying out a localised test area to assess particular tyre-marking resistance before proceeding.

Choosing darker colours or using localised mats in areas where tyres will rest are also identified as options.

Packaging

  • Available in clear 8 litre and 40 litre packs.
  • Pre-packaged in the correct proportions for immediate use.
  • Shelf life: 12 months.
