FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our epoxy flooring products and services.
What is workshop epoxy flooring?

Workshop epoxy flooring is an industrial-grade, heavy-duty coating system specifically engineered to protect and enhance concrete floors in demanding work environments. Unlike standard floor paints or cheap hardware kits that easily chip or peel, true workshop epoxy utilizes high-solids resins applied in a professional multi-layer system (prep, prime, basecoat, and topcoat). This creates a seamless, non-porous shield that is purpose-built to withstand extreme conditions, including heavy machinery, forklift traffic, dropped tools, hot tyre pick-up, and harsh oil or chemical spills

What are the benefits of workshop epoxy flooring?
  • Highly durable against tool drops and heavy use
  • Resistant to oil, grease, and workshop chemicals
  • Seamless, easy-to-clean surface
  • Slip-resistant options available for safety
  • Long-lasting, high-build systems
  • Suitable for DIY and professional installation

What is the recommended application process for workshop epoxy floors?

To achieve a durable, professional-grade finish, we highly recommend following a proven 4-step process:

  • Prep: Diamond grind the concrete to ensure it is clean, dry, and porous.
  • Prime : Apply a penetrating epoxy primer to seal the slab and prevent outgassing.
  • Basecoat: Apply two coats of 100% solids epoxy resin for your main build and colour layer.
  • Topcoat ( optional) : Seal the system with a UV-stable topcoat for ultimate chemical and scratch resistance.
What should I use if my concrete floor has moisture issues?

If your concrete slab is subject to rising damp or high hydrostatic pressure, standard epoxy will eventually bubble and peel. To permanently block moisture vapour transmission, you must apply our dedicated moisture barrier primer, Ultrakote Ultrabarrier. This heavy-duty primer adheres tightly to damp concrete, locking out moisture and protecting the integrity of your final flooring system.

What should I use if my concrete is porous?

Porous concrete absorbs standard coatings too quickly, which can lead to an uneven finish and weak adhesion. To properly seal the slab and create a solid foundation, you must use premium epoxy primer such as Ultrakote Ultra Primer, Sikafloor 161 epoxy primer. They are specifically engineered to penetrate deep into the pores of the concrete, ensuring maximum bonding for your high-build epoxy base coats.

How important is concrete preparation before applying epoxy floor paint?

Preparation is 90% of a successful, long-lasting installation. Epoxy cannot bond to smooth, oily, or dusty concrete. Before applying your epoxy floor paint, the concrete slab must be mechanically diamond ground or thoroughly acid-etched to open up the pores. Any cracks or divots should also be repaired using an epoxy patching mortar before you roll out your primer coat.

Is Epoxy flooring slippery when wet?

It depends on your chosen finish:

  • Full Flake Epoxy: The flakes naturally create a textured, slip-resistant surface perfect for residential use.
  • Solid Colour Epoxy: This cures to a smooth, glossy finish that can be slippery when wet. You can mix in our floating anti-slip additive for mild, everyday traction.
  • Certified Slip Ratings: If your floor needs to pass official slip tests, neither of the above is enough on its own. You must broadcast a heavy-duty non-slip media (like aluminium oxide or boral sand) into the coating.
What type of non-slip media do I need for my required slip rating?

If your garage or commercial floor needs to meet certified Australian safety standards, you must broadcast the correct aggregate into the wet epoxy. Here is the recommended non-slip media for your target rating:

  • P3 or R10: Boral 30/60 sand or 80-grit aluminium oxide
  • P4 or R11: Boral 1mm sand or 46 or 30-grit aluminium oxide
  • P5 or R12: Boral 1mm sand or 24-grit aluminium oxide

Why should I use industrial-grade epoxy for my workshop instead of standard hardware store kits?

Workshops are demanding environments exposed to heavy machinery, tool drops, and oil leaks. Standard hardware store kits often lack the thickness and durability to survive these conditions, frequently peeling under "hot tyre pick-up." Our workshop systems utilize premium high-solids resins trusted by professionals to provide a highly durable, long-lasting, and easy-to-clean shield for your concrete slab.
